Strait of Hormuz Blockade: Iran Halts Oil Exports Amidst Escalating Tensions (2026)

Iran's bold move has sent shockwaves through the global energy market. The Strait of Hormuz, a vital artery for oil and gas exports, has been effectively shut down by Iran's strategic actions. For four days, a combination of drone strikes and a climate of fear has halted commercial maritime traffic, despite the US's aggressive response.

At least four tankers have been targeted, and maritime traffic has plummeted, with insurers pulling their coverage. The situation escalated when Iran's Revolutionary Guards adviser, Brig Gen Ebrahim Jabbari, declared their intention to attack any ship attempting to cross.

But here's where it gets controversial: Iran's ability to carry out these attacks is now in question. The US Central Command has been targeting Iran's naval forces, claiming to have crippled or sunk all 11 ships operating in the Gulf of Oman. One notable target was the Shahid Bagheri, a converted container ship designed to launch drones and helicopters, which Iranian officials boasted could remain at sea for extended periods.

General Dan Caine of the US military confirmed the strikes, stating that Tomahawk cruise missiles were used, targeting Iranian naval forces and southern Iran. Satellite images revealed heavy damage to Iran's Bandar Abbas naval base.

While Israel focused on Tehran and regime sites, the US military's key strategy was to secure the south, controlling maritime routes and airspace. The US also reported no signs of Iran attempting to mine the shipping lanes, though they targeted Iran's submarine fleet at Bandar Abbas.

Despite the risks, some tankers are considering turning off their transponders and attempting transit at night, even without insurance. Conventionally, the Strait of Hormuz handles about a fifth of the world's crude oil, but this varies greatly by region. For instance, while the Americas import 12.5% of their oil via the Strait, China's reliance is much higher at 45.7%.

Iran's strategy has shifted to bombing infrastructure and ships at port, with more successful results. Satellite images showed damage to Saudi Arabia's largest oil refinery, Ras Tanura, which shut down after drone attacks caused a fire. Qatar's state-run energy firm halted LNG production due to military attacks, and a fire broke out in Fujairah, UAE, after a drone was intercepted.

The impact on oil and gas prices has been significant, with Brent crude surging to $83 a barrel, a 15% increase. Donald Trump is now considering proposals for the US government to help tankers obtain insurance, aiming to restore confidence in the region's energy sector after the war initiated by the US and Israel.
