South Carolina Gamecocks fans, brace yourselves: the team is facing another setback. Edge rusher Desmond Umeozulu, a valuable reserve, is heading for the transfer portal. This news broke late Thursday night, just before the portal's window slammed shut on Friday. Umeozulu's departure marks the end of his three-year tenure with the Gamecocks.
During the 2025 season, Umeozulu played in every single one of the 12 games as a junior, even earning a starting spot in one. He finished the year with 19 tackles, two tackles for loss, and a single sack. In the disappointing 28-14 loss to Clemson last November, he contributed with one tackle.
Despite being a highly-regarded, four-star recruit coming out of high school, Umeozulu never managed to secure a starting position at South Carolina. Over his entire college career, he recorded a total of 30 tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss, and that lone sack.
And here's a sobering statistic: Umeozulu is the 23rd South Carolina player to enter the transfer portal, according to 247Sports. This raises questions about the team's ability to retain talent and build a consistent roster.
