Mehegan's Rising Star: A Trainer's Triumph
Michael Mehegan, a dedicated trainer from Mornington, experienced a triumphant evening at the races on Thursday. His three-year-old horse, The Benchmark, emerged victorious in Heat 10 of the Ladbrokes Future Stars Series at Pakenham. This win was particularly meaningful, as The Benchmark had previously finished close but suffered an injury after its last race at Sandown.
The Benchmark's victory was well-deserved. Sent out as the favorite at $2.90, it demonstrated exceptional skill under the guidance of Lachlan Neindorf. Despite facing a challenging situation in the home straight, The Benchmark managed to secure the win and even overcame a post-race protest.
Mehegan's success is intertwined with the remarkable performance of Prussian Vixen, the dam of The Benchmark. Mehegan was part of the ownership and had already achieved significant victories with Prussian Vixen in the 2017 and 2018 G3 Geoffrey Bellmaine Stakes.
Mehegan expressed his excitement, praising Neindorf's exceptional ride. He noted that The Benchmark had been performing well in all its starts, but the previous race had been particularly challenging due to a sore back. The trainer's satisfaction was evident, as he celebrated the horse's return to form.
Earlier in the evening, Neindorf and Enver Jusufovic's four-year-old horse, Plunger, dominated Heat 9 of the Future Stars Series in its debut. Neindorf described Plunger as a 'really nice horse' and mentioned his positive impression from previous interactions.
The road ahead for these talented horses is set for the $250,000 Future Stars Series Final, scheduled for February 26 at Pakenham. This final event promises to be a highly anticipated spectacle, showcasing the skills of these rising stars in the racing world.
