Further Ado: A Derby Contender Emerges from the Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes!
It's the dream of every horse racing enthusiast: witnessing a star in the making. Further Ado, a promising two-year-old, just took a significant step toward the Kentucky Derby, earning a valuable 10 Derby points at the Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes.
Trainer Brad Cox knew that replicating Further Ado's impressive 20-length maiden victory from last month would be a tall order. However, he was confident that the colt's stamina would shine on a longer track. "He's a two-turn horse," Cox stated after Further Ado's 1 3/4-length victory in the Grade 2, $400,000 Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes, a key prep race for the 2026 Kentucky Derby held at Churchill Downs. This win highlights the unpredictable nature of horse racing; not every race can be a runaway success, but consistency and strategic racing are crucial.
After dominating his rivals over 1 1/16 miles at Keeneland, the $550,000 Gun Runner colt, owned by Spendthrift Farm, repeated the feat in the 40-degree chill, proving his prowess in two-turn races.
Jockey Irad Ortiz Jr., who has ridden Further Ado to both victories, shared his satisfaction, saying, "I'm happy we got there on time, and the horse did everything really, really professional."
But here's where it gets interesting: Further Ado's performance significantly impacted the Kentucky Derby odds. He shortened to 14-1 in the pari-mutuel Kentucky Derby Future Wager and 9-1 in the fixed-odds pool at Caesars Sportsbook in Nevada. This puts him as the second choice, behind Ted Noffey.
Spendthrift general manager Ned Toffey expressed his enthusiasm, stating, "Really encouraging and a lot of fun. This horse is going to relish the added ground."
Further Ado, after a couple of sprint losses early in his career, was the favorite, starting from post position 6 out of 7 juveniles. He navigated the first turn wide and ran in fourth, three lengths behind the pacesetter, Dr. Kapur. The race then evolved into a thrilling three-way battle in the homestretch, with Further Ado ultimately taking the lead in the final 100 yards. He held off Universe for the win.
Further Ado's winning time was 1:43.33 on the fast track, the second-fastest Kentucky Jockey Club since 2010. The top five finishers earned Derby qualifying points: 10-5-3-2-1.
Cox plans to train Further Ado in Florida this winter, with potential starts at Gulfstream Park, Fair Grounds, and Oaklawn.
And this is the part most people miss... Only two horses in the last half-century have won the Kentucky Derby after competing in the Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes. This makes Further Ado's journey even more compelling.
